What Good readers Do.
Beginning Reading
- Start by looking at the title and any pictures on the front of the book.
- Discuss what this story will be about
- Look at the names of the author and the illustrator, see if there is any information on the inside cover on the author- share this information
- Identify some difficult words and show how to chunk and solve words
- Have student look for words they do not know
During Reading
- As you read, stop and ask the child to make predictions about what is going to happen next and why they think so.
- Look at the pictures on pages, look for clues, talk about what will happen next.
- Who are the characters?
- What do you like about them?
- How do you think a certain character felt when _____?
After Reading
- Where did this story take place?
- Identify the connection between the ending and the beginning of the story, look at words and pictures.
- Make a story board using pictures ( draw or use magazines to find pictures etc) to retell the main events of the story
- mix up the order of the events and ask student to re-arrange
